MetroLink Schedule Changes Through Oct. For Construction near Eads Bridge

Evening and late night MetroLink operations will be modified through early October starting tonight, August 12, so crews can upgrade the light rail track system just east of the Eads Bridge.

During this time, Blue Line trains will operate between the Shrewsbury MetroLink Station and the Civic Center MetroLink Station only. Eastbound Blue Line passengers will need to use Red Line trains to access destinations east of the Civic Center MetroLink Station.

Westbound Blue Line passengers will need to use the Red Line between Fairview Heights and Civic Center stations. This will add up to 10minutes to the commute of those Blue Line passengers. Red Line customers will not experience any delays on the MetroLink system due to the construction project.

This modified schedule will begin each night at either 8 p.m. or midnight, or could be cancelled depending on special events, weather, and other operations needs. Regular service will resume at the beginning of service each weekday morning.

On Saturday and Sunday, regular service will resume at 8 a.m.

Metro’s Chief Operating Officer Ray Friem Receives FTA Award for Manager of the Year

COO Ray Friem introducing President & CEO John Nations to rail maintenance earlier this year

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) presented Ray Friem, the Chief Operating Officer at Metro Transit, with the Region VII Transportation Manager of the Year Award today during the Missouri Public Transit Association meeting in Osage Beach, Missouri.  Region VII of the Federal Transportation Administration covers four states: Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Metro Transit in St. Louis is the largest transit provider in Missouri.

The FTA award recognizes Friem for his dedication to providing quality public transportation to the St. Louis region. It also recognizes his many achievements including leading an internationally recognized vehicle maintenance program which has significantly reduced costs while greatly improving service reliability to transit customers. Friem began his career in transit as a mechanic in Pittsburgh, and then joined Metro in 1995 as a light rail vehicle maintenance superintendent. In 2001, he was promoted to Chief Mechanical Officer and then was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Transit Services in 2003.

The maintenance program at Metro, which focuses on preventative maintenance, strong communication, extending the life of the vehicle and innovative technological developments, has saved the Agency millions of dollars, and helped keep buses and trains running through difficult financial times. The predictive maintenance plan takes a vehicle from the cradle to the grave with major inspection points at every 50,000 miles. MetroBus vehicles stay on the road an average of 15 years and 750,000 miles compared to a typical life expectancy of 500,000 miles over a 12-year period.

Friem also is one of the most public faces of Metro, speaking at public meetings and on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s online Metro Live Chat with Jessica Mefford-Miller. Often, he is the voice of leadership during an operational problem, whether its directing passengers during a bus bridge, guiding mechanics, evacuating riders, or heading out to help in snow and ice. Last Thursday, Friem showed even simple leadership is very useful by helping change the tire of a group of Floridian moms and daughters on the cobblestones of Laclede’s Landing at 5 p.m.

Many congratulations to Ray, and his entire team, for being the operational system of the entire Agency, and helping to control costs and keep more service on the road and tracks.

Metro Begins Bus Stop Evaluation Program to Make Routes More Efficient

Part of Metro’s Long-Range Transit Plan is to help make the existing system more efficient, better for customers, and more sustainable. In addition to looking how the system can grow over time, the Long-Range Plan focuses on improving the customer experience and improving distribution of information. As part of the plan, the Planning Department has begun to evaluate the MetroBus stops in our entire system in Missouri through the Bus Stop Evaluation Program. Our customers have the chance to provide feedback and understand the process used to make the system more efficient.

Metro will relocate bus stops, as necessary, to make service more efficient and provide consistent spacing of bus stops. Stops being evaluated for removal will have a sign starting this week. This will help keep buses on time, while saving fuel and maintenance expenses. Metro will survey each route and determine adequate placing of each stop. The planning department started putting signs on the #32 M. L. King Chouteau and #16 City Limits yesterday, and will do #91 Olive and #57 Manchester-Wildwood on Monday. Each sign lists Metro’s customer service line for comment. You can also leave your comment on Nextstop, Facebook, Twitter or by emailing customerservice@metrostlouis.org with the stop location.

The program will look at every MetroBus stop in Missouri and use the established Metro Service Standards and the Federal American Disability Act (ADA) requirements to guide evaluation:
Service Standards – Stop Spacing
Local Service
Stops located at major intersections, major traffic generators, and where bus routes or rail lines cross
Stops located in high populated areas every 1/8 to 1/4 mile apart
Stops located in lower populated areas every 1/4 to 1/2 miles apart
Express Service – Limited Stop
Express routes over local service in high density areas should be located approximately 1/3 to 1/2 mile apart
ADA Requirements
Pad
Depth 8′ with slope parallel to street with 5% or less grade
Width 5′ with slope perpendicular to street with 2% or less grade
3′ clear path required
Public Way
Curb cuts at each intersection
Condition of sidewalk
5′ passing clearance if sidewalk is 200′ or longer

In addition to these guidelines, planners will pay attention to who lives near the stop (i.e. concentration of senior housing), nearby employment centers, and existing amenities. After two weeks, if no valid comments are received, a request will be sent to remove the stop. Also, through the New Freedom Grant, approximately 130 bus stops will be improved and will meet ADA requirements. With additional funding, we will add concrete pads for boarding and benches at several MetroBus stops.

This should provide less stop and go for buses, fewer bumpy rides, more efficiency on fuel and wear-and-tear, and free up more money back to put buses on streets and other projects. Over the next few weeks, Nextstop will publish lists of the proposed bus stops, and will give the list to Paraquad, members of Metro’s ADA advisory group and local officials.

If you have any suggestions for stops needing evaluation, let us know in the comments.
