BRT is a great option – it seems to be working extremely well out in LA, everything from on street to dedicated busways:

The Urbanophile link reminds me a lot of one of my favorite books from the 1980’s, “The Nine Nations of North America”, by Joel Garreau. Both ignore traditional political boundaries, and focus on economic and social affinities and realities.
